The Economics of NFL Free Agency

In the wake of the impressive signing bonus and salary the Philadelphia Eagles awarded Asante Samuel, Philly.com released an article by David Katz on the future implications of the contract.

Without a doubt it is worth a read for providing an educated view from an angle the fan does not necessarily consider.  The article can be viewed here:  http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/eagles/20080305_Free-agency_splurge_could_throw_Eagles_for_a_loss.html

However, PhillySportsJunkie feels two important points must be made.

Regardless of how teams ’should’ structure contracts (i.e. shifting large signing bonuses to greater yearly guarantees), the market is dictated by the status quo.  Being that Asante Samuel had the ability to command a $20 million signing bonus, if the Eagles chose to withhold that in favor of spread out guarantees, chances are Samuel signs elsewhere.

The second point is that any Super Bowl contending team requires exceptional and experienced skill players.  These skill players are in low supply and high demand.  Acquiring one or more of their services necessitates offering lucrative and less than ideal contracts.

In an ideal world a team would be able to draft a team full of talent that ascended to Pro Bowl level while under their rookie contracts.  More realistically a team must employ savvy drafting while also solidifying their drafted core with free agent talent.

Eagles Offseason Hand Continues to Show Aces

March 5, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Aces

It is rare that the demands of a passionate fan base and those of a team front office completely align, especially in Philadelphia.

A Philadelphia Eagles fan is quick to recall yearly horror stories of watching two memorable tandems – Charles Johnson and Torrance Small, as well as James Thrash and Todd Pinkston – masquerade as starting wide receivers.  Likewise in hindsight the team receives too little credit for its consistent success under Andy Reid, albeit success that has not consummated in a Super Bowl trophy.

The differences of opinion through the years serve to make the moments of harmony more appreciable and unexpected.

Entering the 2008 off-season, fans were unwilling to initially extend trust to the front office.  Trust is to be earned.  An uneventful off-season in which the biggest acquisitions come through the draft seemed all too easy to picture because that blueprint has a historical precedent.

While less than a week of free agency has passed, it is enough to bridge that gap of trust.

After acquiring the premier defensive free agent in Asante Samuel as well as a necessary edge-rusher in Chris Clemons (no need to rehash those signings further), the Eagles set their sights on offensive help.

Monday afternoon Philadelphia fans, newscasters, and radio hosts were all giddy – the Eagles were making a serious push for Randy Moss.

The front office threw caution to the wind and decided to take a calculated risk in signing arguably the #1 offensive weapon in the game last year.  What fan would have any trouble getting behind that decision?

Randy Moss would mean several things.  An off-season stamped by the acquisition of both the top offensive and defensive pieces available (not only available – two of the top in the game overall).  The addition of scary offensive production - 98 receptions, 1,493 reception yards, and 23 touchdowns in 2007.  A fired up McNabb, Westbrook, and Runyan.  A season of Super Bowl potential.

As you now know, Randy Moss elected to stay in New England, choosing the intangibles over more money and more guarantees, the only bullets the Eagles could fire.

No question – it is unfortunate.  What could have been!

But all is not lost.  The Philadelphia fan base as a whole gains something from the Randy Moss pursuit.  It gains faith that the team has its best interests in mind.

The Philadelphia Eagles clearly wanted their fans to know that they gave Moss their best effort.  The attempt reveals that the team has identified wide receiver as a need after all.  Randy Moss was the most dynamic resource available to fill that need.  Going forward, expect the brain trust to move onto the next best option and so forth.

Should Randy Moss and others choose to go elsewhere, as long as there has been aggressive and honest pursuit, the Philadelphia fan base will mourn with as opposed to in spite of the team.

In 2008 at least, the front office sees the need for a shakeup, is willing to spend money, and is willing to take risks.  Look forward to the next move; stop dreading the lack of one.

Andy Reid 2 – Hot Seat 0

March 3, 2008 · 1 Comment

Fire Extinguisher

Just before NFL free agency began at 12:01AM on Friday, PhillySportsJunkie predicted that Andy Reid and the Philadelphia Eagles would find a way to make a splash in a weak talent pool.

Splash!

In reflecting on the events of the first three days of free agency, who thought it would happen so swiftly?

Aggressively and decisively targeting consensus #1 free agent Asante Samuel, the Philadelphia Eagles refused to let him leave town, determined to make an immediate statement.  Six years and fifty-seven million dollars later, the Eagles had their statement.

They were not done. Keep reading →

King Cole too Anxious to Ascend the Throne

March 3, 2008 · Leave a Comment

King Crown

Cole Hamels is upset.  On Sunday, March 2nd the Philadelphia Phillies renewed his contract for $500,000.  Hamels called the renewal a ”low blow” and said he would not soon forget the slight.

Cole is a phenomenal pitcher, but he is getting ahead of himself.  Does this conjure thoughts of Ryan Howard?  It shouldn’t because the comparison is not an accurate one.

Be sure to check out Inquirer baseball columnist Jim Salisbury who today wrote a piece on Cole Hamels being out of line.  Specifically Salisbury discredits the Hamels / Howard comparison, while using Chien-Ming Wang of the New York Yankees as a service class comparison.

Closing the Book on the Forsberg Follies

February 29, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Frustrated

It seemed like a good idea at the time.  Peter Forsberg desired a return to the NHL and the Philadelphia Flyers were at the top of his list.

At the outset of February, the Flyers were playing an impressive brand of hockey, kicking the month off with a dominant 3-0 win against the Anaheim Ducks that featured a Martin Biron shutout and a Mike Knuble hat trick.

The outlook was bright for the Fly-guys.  A 29-17-5 record was good for 1st place in the Atlantic Division.

A season that began with moderate expectations was quickly inspiring hope for more, hope for a run at the vaunted Cup.

The day after the victory over the Ducks, when GM Paul Holmgren returned from Sweden after sitting down with Peter Forsberg, it seemed like a blessing.

There were a few dissenting opinions, conjuring past images of Forsberg refusing a shootout opportunity, missing time due to injury only to lead Sweden to Gold, and generally questioning a man with the nickname Foppy.

All that said the situation was ripe for Forsberg’s triumphant return.  The leadership contingent of Smith, Timonen, and Richards was in place.  There would be no pressure on Forsberg to skate major minutes or perform magic acts as the team was already successful.  The only thing required of him would be to fit in on a 2nd line and add his experience, skill, and speed.  In an arms race in pursuit of the Cup, how could that be a bad thing?

And then the Forsberg follies began. Keep reading →

The Andy Reid Hot Seat Gets Hotter

Kool Aid

It looks like someone is drinking the same kool-aid as PhillySportsJunkie.

As you are aware, today at 12:01AM marked the start of NFL free agency and with it came a mandate to the Philadelphia Eagles.  One of the Junkie’s favorite journalists, the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Phil Sheridan, supported the Eagles taking free agency risks.  Be sure to check it out.

Andy Reid – The Time is Yours

February 28, 2008 · 3 Comments

On the Hot Seat

After lying dormant for nearly a month, the National Football League is back.  The scouting combines have begun and the draft is close enough to discuss.  Most relevant is the start of free agency, beginning tomorrow (Friday) at 12:01AM.

Now the Philadelphia Eagle fan-base can look to the future instead of pursuing a collective lobotomy after watching the New York Giants raise the Lombardi Trophy in Super Bowl XLII.  The nightmares will begin to subside.

On the surface it seems free agency is set to be a disappointment.

One by one the studs have disappeared by virtue of the dastardly franchise tag.  Kansas City DE Jared Allen, the NFL sack leader, was locked down.  A player the Eagle reportedly had major interest in, Seattle CB Marcus Trufant, was tagged.  Ditto Baltimore LB Terrell Suggs and Dallas S Ken Hamlin.  You get the point.

New England and Chicago unrestricted free agent WRs Randy Moss and Bernard Berrian are expected to resign.

Not only that but two popular trade targets – Cincinnati WR Chad Johnson and Arizona WR Larry Fitzgerald – have been publicly taken off the market by their respective GMs.

Who is left?  Patriots CB Asante Samuel, WR Donte Stallworth and a collection of mid-level talent featuring Antwan Odom, Justin Smith, Travis LaBoy, Gibril Wilson, and Andre Davis.  Here’s a challenge – name all of their respective positions and teams.  Miss any?  The point is that they are not carrying any team to the Promised Land.

The more important point is that none of it matters. Keep reading →

Critiquing the Phillies 101

Money Stack

Much respect to Todd Zolecki, who blogs on The Phillies Zone, for his most recent post.  Zolecki makes an important quantity vs. quality distinction between criticizing Phillies management for not spending enough money and criticizing them for the way in which money is spent.

Why the Phillies are Right for Waiting on Howard

February 27, 2008 · 1 Comment

Pat's CheesteakWikipedia Image - Pats Cheesesteak

Last week a historical baseball arbitration case caused quite a stir in Philadelphia.  With spring training on the horizon Ryan Howard was awarded $10 million, a record for a player with less than three years of major league service.

The decision sent the Phillies to their first ever arbitration defeat and raised a number of comments on the urgency of structuring a long term deal for Howard.

He is the fastest to 100 home runs!  He hits more home runs per at bat than Babe Ruth and Barry Bonds!  This is the 2005 Rookie of the Year and 2006 MVP we are talking about!  He has averaged 52.5 HR and 142.5 RBI over the past two seasons!

Scanning the Internet blogs and forums, Philadelphia is clearly worried about losing their prized slugger.  In addition to Howard’s statistics, age-old fan favorite themes are used as support:  the Phillies brass is cheap and they won’t do what it takes to win.  It is the same old story.

One word – relax.

Focus your worries on something legitimate.  Brad Lidge and his balky knee.  The 5-spot in the starting rotation.  Kyle Kendrick being traded to the Yomiuri Giants

Why?  It’s simple – the Phillies are doing the right thing. Keep reading →
